Friends Annual Event: Meet the Author Verna Gates

Each year, The Friends of Irondale Public Library host an event to welcome the public and Friends members to the library. The Friends invite you to an evening with Verna Gates on Thursday, October 6 at 6:00 pm.

Meet the author of 100 Things to Do in Birmingham Before You Die, now in the second edition.

This program is free, sponsored by the Friends. All welcome.

More about Ms. Gates:

Verna Gates has worked for TIME magazine, The Guardian, and was one of the original 50 employees of CNN. She formerly reported for the world’s largest news organization, Reuters International News Service reaching 1 billion readers and 417,000 media outlets around the world.

Her writing has won numerous awards including a lifetime achievement award from the National Federation of Presswomen.

In Alabama, you may have seen her work as a commentator for Capitol Journal for Alabama Public Television and for reporting the weekly news wrap for Troy Public Radio during All Things Considered.

In 2006, Gates founded Fresh Air Family (www.freshairfamily.org), a state-wide organization dedicated to outdoor education. Its most popular program is Gross Out Camp, which served more than 2,000 children in 54 camps this past summer.

Verna Gates was also named Alabama Conservationist of the Year by the Alabama Environmental Council, an Alabama Treasure by the Huntsville Times, and One of Alabama’s Unforgettable Faces by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism.
