Irondale City Council OKs Agreement to sell water to Birmingham

The Irondale City Council unanimously approved an agreement last week for its water system to sell up to 1 million gallons of water a day to Birmingham Water Works at double the price Irondale Water charges its customers. But the Birmingham Water Works Board of Directors still has to sign off on the deal.

Details have to be ironed out, but if approved Irondale would receive $10.72 per 1,000 gallons of water transferred to the Birmingham system. Irondale Mayor Tommy Joe Alexander said Birmingham Water offered to double the rate Irondale residents are billed by the Irondale Water System.

“That means if we can furnish them a million [gallons], that’s between $10,000 and $15,000 a day for the city of Irondale,” Alexander told the council.

Birmingham Water would pay for infrastructure costs to transfer the water.
