Irondale’s new Police Chief Ken Atkinson recently launched the new Irondale Citizens Police Academy. This is the latest in a series of recent measures he’s implemented with the goal of building a stronger partnership between the Irondale Police Department (IPD) and the Irondale community.
The Irondale Citizens Police Academy is an interactive program for Irondale citizens who want to learn more about law enforcement. Irondale police officers will provide classroom instruction, special guest and numerous hands-on demonstrations, that will give participants an in-depth view of law enforcement. Class topics and activities include:
- Range Day: hands-on instruction at the shooting range. Learn the proper
techniques and safety procedures. (*Range Day will take place on a Saturday). - Active Shooter Training: learn how to prepare for, and respond to, situations
where there is an “active shooter” at your workplace, the mall, etc. - Tour Irondale’s Police Department and Police Dispatch Center.
- Detective Investigations: Learn the reality and basic procedures of criminal investigations.
- Tactical Demonstration: IPD Tactical team will demonstrate their current, cutting-edge training for emergency response situations.
- District Attorney: Jefferson County District Attorney, Brandon Falls will be a guest speaker at one of the sessions,

CLASS LOCATION: 5415 Beacon Drive, Suite 123 (Irondale Police -Grants Mill Sub-Station)
This is an (8)week program which takes place each Thursday from 6-8pm
*Class is open to anyone 18 or older who lives or works in Irondale.*
