GARDENDALE, Alabama — Gardendale faced a fourth down in the red zone with under a minute remaining at Driver Stadium on Friday, but a potential game-tying pass sailed out of the back of the end zone to allow Class 6A No. 3 Shades Valley to escape with a 42-35 victory.
The Mounties’ (5-0, 3-0) rushing attack overwhelmed the Rockets (3-3, 3-1), as Gardendale never led but managed to hang around for the game’s duration. The game was tied 21-all at halftime, and while the Rockets were seemingly finished, down 14 with less than 10 minutes remaining, the Rockets had a chance until the final minute.
The Mounties can run the football, led by senior Keith Mixon, senior quarterbackRaShad Louie and senior running back Evin Buchannon. Louie piled up 146 yards on the ground, including runs of 33, 61, 35 and 19 yards. He had three rushing touchdowns.
